Kidney Disease

The kidneys maintain the body’s internal environment in a relatively constant or homeostatic state. These bean-shaped organs regulate the body’s fluid volume by excreting excess water and solutes. But when deficits occur, water and solutes are conserved.

The kidneys also regulate the acid-base balance and excrete metabolic wastes. They are also responsible in urine formation, blood pressure regulation, red blood cell production and metabolism of calcium.

Kidney disease is frequently caused by systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and uncontrolled blood pressure. Poststreptococcal infections of the throat and skin can also cause kidney disease by activating inflammatory responses that damage the kidney membranes.

Prolonged use of analgesics, hardening of the arteries, kidney stones, cancers and heroin abuse may also cause kidney disease. Kidney functions decrease with increasing age; thus, it is especially important to monitor the drug intake of the older adults to prevent the destruction of the kidney cells.
