The first appearance of gray hair can be a traumatic experience, particularly if gray hair is not common at your age. However, there are some natural home remedies that can help fight premature gray hair with little risk. Consult your doctor before using these treatments, especially if you have allergies or a skin condition, as there could be adverse side effects when using some of these remedies, depending on your circumstances.

Capsicum Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil

According to Jennie Harding, author of “The Essential Oils Handbook: All the Oils You Will Ever Need for Health, Vitality and Well-Being,” a mixture of capsicum essential oil and jojoba oil can be applied to the scalp to help get rid of premature gray hair.

To make and use this mixture, combine 1 tsp. capsicum essential oil with 10 tsp. jojoba oil in a small, dark-colored glass bottle and shake to mix. Gently massage a small portion of the oil onto the scalp for 2 to 3 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water and washing with your regular shampoo.

This treatment can be used daily as long as it doesn’t irritate your skin or scalp, and unused portions of the mixture can be stored for up to 90 days in a dark, dry and cool area.

Alfalfa Essential Oil, Carrot Essential Oil & Avocado Oil

According to Ann Worwood, author of “The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy,” alfalfa essential oil, carrot essential oil and avocado oil can be used to help fight premature gray hair.

To make this home remedy, combine 1/2 tsp. alfalfa essential oil, 1/2 tsp. carrot essential oil and 8 tsp. avocado oil in a small container and shake or stir. Gently massage a small amount of the mixed oils onto the scalp and roots of the hair. Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water and washing with a gentle shampoo and conditioner.

This treatment can be used every day as long as no irritation occurs, and unused portions can be stored in the medicine cabinet or cupboard for up to 60 days.

Henna Powder, Fenugreek Seeds, Fresh Basil, Fresh Mint & Coconut Oil

To make this mixture, combine 1/2 tsp. henna powder, 1 tsp. fenugreek seeds, 1 tsp. chopped fresh basil, 1 tsp. chopped fresh mint and 4 tsp. coconut oil in a blender and puree on high speed for 10 seconds. Massage half of the mixture onto your scalp for 4 to 5 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water and washing with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.
