While many consider white and grey hair a natural part of aging, many find it disheartening and embarrassing. Home remedies are available, however, that use natural, easy to find ingredients to help restore your hair’s natural color. Keep in mind that the FDA has not approved these remedies. Talk with your doctor before trying them on yourself.

Almond Oil and Sesame Seeds

According to Vasant Lad, author of “The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies,” a mixture of almond oil and ground sesame seeds can be applied to the scalp to help stop hair from turning white and, in some cases, reverse the process. To make this mixture, combine 4 tbsp. almond oil with 1 tsp. sesame seeds in a blender or food processor and puree for 10 to 15 seconds. Massage the liquid onto the hair follicles and scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes with a towel around your neck to prevent dripping. Rinse your hair with warm water and wash with your regular shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used daily unless it irritates your scalp; unused portions can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two weeks for later use.

Carrot Root Essential Oil, Fenugreek Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil

According to Jennie Harding, author of “The Essential Oils Handbook: All the Oils You Will Ever Need for Health, Vitality and Well-Being,” a mixture of carrot root essential oil, fenugreek essential oil and jojoba oil can be applied to the scalp to help turn white hair darker over time. To create this mixture, combine 1 tsp. carrot root essential oil, 1 tsp. fenugreek essential oil and 6 tbsp. jojoba oil in a clean bottle with a tight-fitting lid and shake it to combine the ingredients. Gently massage the mixture onto the scalp and leave it on for 1 hour before rinsing with clean water and washing with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as it doesn’t cause any irritation or redness; unused portions can be stored in a cool, dark place for 90 days.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Blackstrap Molasses

According to Paul C. Bragg, author of “Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System,” a mixture of apple cider vinegar and blackstrap molasses can be consumed on a daily basis to help white hair regain some of its natural color in some cases. To make and use this mixture, combine 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar with 1 tbsp. blackstrap molasses and 4 oz. hot water and stir to combine. Drink the mixture once per day, preferably after eating your first meal. This remedy can be used daily, but it should be noted that it may not be ideal for those with diabetes. If you have diabetes and want to use this remedy, consult your doctor first.
